Want me to shout NOT. EVERYONE. HAS. THE. INTERNET. AT. HOME. on their direction repeatedly? (can follow up with LIBRARIES PROVIDE INTERNET ACCESS DURRRRRRR)

And not everyone is able to use computers without help and support: many disabled people, many elderly people rely on trained library staff to help them access public and commercial services which are no longer available any other way.

Also how are people who can’t afford the internet/electronics at home supposed to ACCESS the internet? Libraries are a free solution that can mean the world to some.

Information Literacy is so important it is a specific module on my MA Librarianship. Yes the internet is a valuable resource, especially for journals, but there is also a lot of rubbish on there. Your librarian will show you how to search effectively, both online and offline.

Libraries are places where information that is of use and interest to the local audience is collated and made easily accessible in many forms. To my knowledge there is no equivalent available on the internet, it has lots of the parts of what libraries are, but not the whole.

in fairness it is 2018, not 1986, even poor income families often have access to the internet.
-
Via the library ... broadband costs *money*
-
and books don't? and the building they're in? and the staff that run them? even a pay as you go phone has access to the internet for very little money. I like libraries, but they are a relic of the pre-internet era for the same reason VHS and phone booths are gone.
-
FYI: Libraries don't only provide access to books. They provide access to DVDs, they provide access to computers, printers & the internet, they provide access to classes so people learn how to navigate the internet and databases (and how to figure out what's fake vs real news).
-
Hear hear! And please, liberal leftie, come to my class and talk to my adult learners about the affordability of data when the government expects you to go online everyday to do job search
-
I'm not saying get rid of them, I'm saying that they are not free either, and most if not all of the services they provide are also provided by other organisations or services. I like libraries, but lets stop pretending it's 1923. People even have indoor plumbing these days.
-
Well, what's your point? Of course, libraries aren't 'free' in the sense of not costing anything. Doesn't society have an obligation towards those who cannot afford the other services you're referring to? Libraries are neutral & offer help to anyone, regardless of their status.
-
yes it does, but maybe there's better ways of doing that that don't involve large virtually empty buildings full of dog-eared books that haven't been read in a decade? We don't send telegrams anymore either because technology and access to it has surpassed them.

And I wonder from where all that information on Internet comes? Hmmm. Could it be that it comes from... the books?

It's as if they believe now we have the internet, that's it, there will be no new developments in the information technology world. I'm ALREADY out of touch with some apps, and I'm only 31! God knows what will be around when I'm 70, but I hope there are librarians to help me!

Presumably we should also bypass libraries as people consulted sages priests and town criers before the age of the printing press.

Besides: you get a lot more opinion than information on the internet
