Excited to share this preprint! The second in our 28andMe series. We show that progesterone shapes MTL volume across the human menstrual cycle. 30 consecutive days of serum hormone levels and hippocampal segmentation--a true labor of love (and eye strain).

Estro and prog are powerful regulators of hipp plasticity in rodents and NHPs. Dense-sampling approaches can give us novel insight into this dynamic in humans. Learning how sex hormones impact the MTL is imperative for our understanding of the human brain and for women’s health.

Importantly, however, we show that hippocampal and MTL volume variability is not greater in females (inspired by , , ). In short, we did not identify added variability in females, but merely a source of variability in females.

We didn’t stop there. In study 2, we show that selective suppression of progesterone (via hormonal oral contraceptive) eliminates this relationship. 30 more days of consecutive blood draws + hippocampal segmentation--also now i’m legally blind

Important to be cognizant of the biases we bring to the table when we conduct and report our science.

Excited to share this preprint! We applied deep-sampling approaches to investigate how hormonal fluctuations we experience across the menstrual cycle- a central facet of reproductive life- shapes the brain. 30 consecutive days of MRI scanning & blood draws= a true labor of love.

Squuuueeee just got a fundable score (?!) on my first R01 to study the effects of hormone suppression on the brain - on World Menopause Day! The gods are really smiling. 😭
