RedHat's ncurses installer was (is?) something similar (except the rrrred buttons!).
I recall using RH back around 4 I think it was on my desktop (til 9 EOL'd). RH's were bit fancier, but Slackware never has tried to look pretty, it just wants to do the job without bloat, probably what scares many away from it, kids of today want pretty.. lol
My first Linux was RedHat 8, but with first releases of Fedora I had enough and switched to Ubuntu. Now I'm thinking of fleeing it in favor of Slackware or something derived thereof. Beautiful enough for a nerd like me! ;)
You might give Elementary OS a try before you leave Ubuntu-based distros. Just a thought. ;-)
