Honoured to announce that submissions to our workshop is open. Please submit your papers that explain a deep learning phenomenon either in an empirical or a theoretical way. A great line up of speakers will be participating to our workshop too. It is going to be lots of fun 😁

I have just realized that today is a special day! 02.02.2020 is a palindrome day. The most interesting part is, it's a palindrome day in both US and German date format!</today's useless fact>

50 cognitive biases, quite a few because of energy-intense human brains being so efficient at being more (energy-)efficient, e.g. Google effect, lazy causal inference, self-exceptionalism.

This paper brings an interesting perspective on the explainability of AI&ML. Complicated problems may require complex models that may, in turn, only have complicated explanations that might be difficult to interpret.

Reminder that nature doesn’t care how easy it is for us to study what’s going on on the brain, whether it’s spikes (hard) or synaptic plasticity (extremely hard).

Turkish-: Anyone interested in a Turkish BERT and wants to evaluate it on downstream tasks? I did evaluation only for UD PoS tagging - any help is really appreciated! Would really like to have a proper evaluation before adding it to the Transformers hub🤗

Big News! We have an opening for a tenure track faculty position in robotics at the University of Montreal. This is a very cool position with lots of interesting perks. Please distribute widely the call and consider applying:

Curious what a Covariant-powered robot looks like in live production? Here are a few videos from the Obeta warehouse near Berlin!

So this really, really affected me - bc this still happens to me, all the time... & each time, I ask the same thing: "why?" Most traumatic exp. of uni remains a meeting regarding a project I initiated & led - prof didn't even look at me once, focusing on literally anyone else.

Lack of writing skills can be a) learned and b) easily compensated by the right mix in your team. Communication is important, but writing a cover letter is only on instance of it–also completely lacking the empathy component.

A simple idea that seems to work very well.

I think PhD students are one of the most neglected group of our modern society. Many work extremely hard for long hours with below poverty level incomes. Unfortunately, many end up having different mental health issues.

Given the smoothness of videos, can we learn models more efficiently than with ? We present Sideways - a step towards a high-throughput, approximate backprop that considers the one-way direction of time and pipelines forward and backward passes.

Cool slide with important machine learning tricks! Would make it even more useful to turn it into presentation with short explanations and pointers to references.

I don't like small talk. I like real connections. So I often "do questions" where everyone answers a question on the table. Meaningful discussions tend to follow. It can be a struggle to think of questions though. So I made a website to help with that :)

Academia has a status problem. "You didn't study at Cambridge? You don't work for an Ivy League uni? Then you're nothing." If anything, those who achieve at lower ranked unis are the real stars because they've succeeded despite fewer resources.

Brains are amazing. Our lab demonstrates that single human layer 2/3 neurons can compute the XOR operation. Never seen before in any neuron in any other species. Out now in . Congrats Albert, Tim  & CO

bc it's finally the 1st day of winter vacation for me, I haven't read the + paper yet, but I am already happy our community is putting our effort into tackling this important problem of breast cancer screening (and ultimately broader screening)
