It is both an honour and a privilege to be named Canada’s first female Minister of Finance. I am eager to continue our govts work of helping 🇨🇦s from coast to coast to coast get back on their feet. Together, we will ensure Canada’s economy bounces back from these difficult times.
Canada condemns Russian aggression towards #Ukraine in the #KerchStrait. We call on #Russia to immediately de-escalate, release the captured vessels, and allow for freedom of passage. Canada is unwavering in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
We’re taking more action today.
We’re sanctioning President Putin for his barbaric attack on Ukraine.
We’re calling for Russia to be immediately removed from the international banking system, SWIFT.
This is about following the money. This is about stopping the financing of these illegal blockades. We are today serving notice: if your truck is being used in these protests, your corporate accounts will be frozen.
Congratulations to President-elect . As your friend, neighbour, and closest ally, Canada will work shoulder to shoulder with you as together we confront the greatest challenges of our time, at home and abroad.

Canada today revoked Russia’s & Belarus’ Most Favoured Nation status as trading partners under Canadian law. Russia & Belarus will be subject to a tariff of 35% on their exports to Canada. The only other country in this category is North Korea.
