Former Prime Minister John Turner was proud of our country and its promise. He believed in public service and democracy and devoted his life to Canada. I join Canadians from across the country in extending my deepest condolences to his family.

His mother lived in an extended care wing of a hospital on Salt Spring Island, where I grew up. He visited frequently and the staff, including my mother, appreciated his kindness and devotion.

I met (with my class) John Turner in Ottawa when he was Minister of Finance - we were in grade 9 (or maybe younger) - he showed us around his office and was such a nice guy - no condescension, no tone, just an interesting, nice guy to a bunch of silly, twitchy teenagers...
