I agree that investing in social capital is important. I disagree—and would actively advise against—that flying to SF would be the smartest way to invest.

Still, I'm waiting for a very loud and proud fund that is all-in on *remote*, ie, no office and actively searching out remote founders systematically. Something like an brand, but instead of focusing on alt financing, focusing on remote.

might already have this after reading about their accelerator 🤔 is backing tools/services for remote work.

And on that note... ...saying "remote-first founders" is going to be as weird as saying "color television" before most think.

FWIW, I don't necessarily think that's the best approach, but having a network of scouts in a mix of mid-size cities in the USA + Europe + Latin America might be an interesting way to optimize on the future of (remote-first) founders.

An extreme version of this idea would be to make sure you have scouts in every digital nomad hub. That might seem silly to most SF investors, given the stereotypical digital nomad. But less people spending time in digital nomad hubs are of that stereotype. (Myself included)

Are there any investment theses that already have scout programs/incentives that internalize this idea?

Here are some of my thoughts on optimizing for social capital.

Why? Optimizing your physical location and optimizing your social capital are just that: different optimizations. Trying to optimize for two different things will lead to a sub-optimal outcomes for either.

I definitely follow 80-90% US folks, if not more. I'd love to change that.

I follow ~3x more men than women. 😬 Ask: tag women w/ interesting opinions in tech, startups outside US, crypto, future of education + work, coffee Idea: I'd like another version of this tool, but made to help me understand the geographical diversity of people I follow.

This is a fascinating idea. In a peer-to-peer learning environment, learning communities experience very strong network effects. Let's start by looking at asymptotic marketplaces (like ridesharing) using 's thinking:

Voice notes are 10x better than texts. You can convey more information and nuances, and they're much less likely to be misinterpreted by others. Voice notes are the norm on WhatsApp, but the trend hasn't really taken over with iMessage users. iMessage users: try it out.

Indy folks—I've been writing something on the topic for a while. It's low on my priority list, but when I have a first draft, I'd love to share it with those interested in exchange for feedback. DM me your email if interested.
