#KubeConEU is behind and I'm waiting for my plane at the airport, so here's my stream-of-thought impressions of the conference

attendees that's actually quite an achievement. (Well except "t-shirts still in customs" but even then it turned out alright) 3/n

2) the Kubernetes ecosystem is WAY too big to fit in any one's head. Nobody knows "everything there is to know" about it and that's OK. It might sound evident to most but it's nice to be reminded of it 4/n
Show this thread -
3) we're nowhere near where I'd like us to be but it's heartening to hear so much talk AND see concrete actions in terms of diversity and inclusion. This is everyone's work but some are working harder than others and I salute you

4) Service Meshes are a thing: I'm very fortunate to be already on board but if you still don't understand what all the fuzz is about have a second look (as always I'd suggest starting with
@pcalcado excellent article http://philcalcado.com/2017/08/03/pattern_service_mesh.html …)Show this thread -
4.1) If you're already prototyping/invested in service meshes don't get too distracted about about the latest batch of
@IstioMesh vs@linkerd talk: they don't have the same features. Find out what you need for your use-case first THEN choose. (That's always a good rule-of-thumb)Show this thread -

5) observability's future looks a lot like what
@mipsytipsy has been describing for a long time. I'm still excited about projects like Loki but we're still not talking enough about operational complexity, sampling, o11y's real cost or the need to build all that in-house or notShow this thread -
It seems the rest of us are barely catching up but "index-less searches", "more than 3 pillars", "meaningful correlation between metrics and logs" are still good advice and her and the
@honeycombio people have been saying that for a long time. Credit where credit's dueShow this thread -
6)
@OpenPolicyAgent and Sysdig's Falco address "real problems I didn't quite know how to efficiently solve" and I'll be giving them a try sooner rather than laterShow this thread -
7)
@ciliumproject are doing God's work. Rolling out Istio + Cilium + sockmaps just got pushed to the top of my backlog (by me). I will suggest Cilium as the default CNI for any new K8s cluster to anyone that's willing to listenShow this thread -
8) on a more personal note: I got to exchange a few words with some of my personal heroes and they're all, without exception, super nice and super humble:
@krisnova@bridgetkromhout@bryanl@kohsukekawa@tgraf__ thanks for being so approachableShow this thread -
You inspire the rest of us to be better and for that I thank you
Show this thread -
9) I'm also thankful for the talks about burnout and mental health. It's way past time we had an honest, open conversation about these subjects

10)
@HelmPack 3 can't come soon enough. Having said that I've never understood the visceral reaction some people have for Helm2: those folks tried to address some very difficult problems before that was anywhere near reasonable to even try (before CRDs/RBAC)Show this thread -
And they seem well on their to give us a more-than-reasonable upgrade path to the next version. I've been burned by Tiller in production as much as the next guy, but I still give major props to them and a sincere and heartfelt "thank you"

(plane's about to take off, I'll be back in a couple of hours)

(just got off the plane and ok my way home, sorry for the delay)

11) for my money
@supergiantio 's "how to create Kubernetes experts" was one of the best talks of the whole conf. It is not only the right thing to nurture internal talent it is also the smart/cost effective thing. It's baffling how wrongly some people get thisShow this thread -
12) impostor syndrome is real: I got the chance to speak with a couple of really nice attendees and one of them said "it is humbling to be around so many smart people, I feel like I don't belong". We all struggle with this it seems, but I'm damn sure (and myself) they do belong
Show this thread -
"they"... (God re-reading these make wish for an "edit" button once again. My own typos drive me nuts)
Show this thread -
13) storage in K8s is a hard problem because storage itself is a hard problem. "Sprinkling some K8s doesn't make the problem go away" is probably my favorite quote of the show
Show this thread -
Having said that I can't see what else they can do to help. The abstractions they've created are elegant, easy to use and help you think about the problem the right way. The rest is dependent on the context your application and no one else can help you there

That's it for me, I'm obviously forgetting a ton of important stuff but I'm tired and these are the things that came to mind. Good night everyone, take care of yourself and happy 5th anniversary

OK a last one because I saw this literally just before going to sleep: the YouTube playlist is live!https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj6h78yzYM2PpmMAnvpvsnR4c27wJePh3 …
