Although @gruber described this as a "delight to read", I felt like I was reading a slow-motion car crash!! These recollections make me extremely thankful of the life I have and the company I work for, as this team's environment is my precise idea of hell. https://techreflect.net/2019/12/10/aperture-senior-qa-2004-2005/ …

In my experience it’s almost impossible to talk about the company as a whole, and these things are at the team/group/department level. Swift stdlib is quite pleasant currently.

Ah David, that's a super important point. Looking at it from the outside of course it's easy to be concerned and broad-brush, but naturally it all depends on the team. Is there an internal Yelp! for projects and departments?

Even at the time, I think team cultures varied a great deal within Apple. I definitely experienced crunch times on other teams, before and after, where I worked longer hours but nothing like the experience I had on Aperture.

I’m sure it’s entirely dependent on the team. And I’m certain it still exists. I don’t think it can be blamed on Apple though. Just shitty managers who think they know more than they do.

I"ve been at this Mac/iOS thing a while so I've worked long fulltime runs at Microsoft, Google, the BBC. The only manager who ever shouted and ranted at me was Jacob Refstrup at Apple. This being after Google, I could afford to tell him to go fuck himself and I quit.
