I considered being ex-Mormon leaving a cult.
Evangelicals these days remind me of the same extreme indoctrination I grew up with.
And here's the thread in which #EmptyThePews became a call to share stories of why we're leaving or have already left racist, sexist, and anti-LGBTQ Christian communities.

I lost my faith in Mormons when they tried to convince us in Sunday school that Indigenous genocide was some sort of righteous karma for the Lamanites. Also the deep uncomfortable tension that cane up whenever they had to bring up darkened skin curses, etc.

We were the *only* black family. A lot of the low-key anti-blackness deeply embedded in a lot of Christian teachings, came out. Instead of addressing them, they either went full on romanticization or avoided eye contact and sped through the lesson. Glad I got out.

Thank you for encouraging people to share these stories. I was never indoctrinated into any religion and had no idea how difficult this was for so many. Reading these replies has been quite the lesson.
