I was at Tiananmen Square that night and I saw the PLA's massacre of Chinese civilians; they fired at the crowd I was in. Yes, there were students at the center of the square who were allowed to leave--that's what I reported and is cited misleadingly--but the massacre was real.

Here is Liu Xiaobo addressing a crowd of pro-democracy activists in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He won the Nobel Peace Prize, so Beijing imprisoned him, and he died in custody. Thirty-four years ago today, Beijing crushed the Chinese people's hopes for democracy: June 4, 1989.
