A non mining user obviously cannot influence the rules alone, but he can detect the change in rules and opt-out until somebody mines a block that he likes. You need a full node to see what's going on in the network and decide if you still wanna be part of it
this is exactly my point. the resource materials for this technical discussion should be collated in an easy to find/access, summarized/ simplified for non-expert geeks to digest and understand. diagrams, animation, videos, or TED-style presentation are also preferred
