I think at best we can say is that the UASF concept had wide support, but BIP148 lacked consensus among Bitcoin Core developers.

If “users” had it their way, we would have had a chain split on 1 August...

You don't get it. UASF succeeded in what it meant to do. Goal was never to activate it without miners. Point was to pressure miners. Worked.

That is a post hoc rationalization designed to save pride. I was there. I heard the backchatter. People meant their threat. It wasnt a ruse.

All knew the scenario with few miners was not ideal & messy. That is why there was a lot of faith that the miners will come to their senses.

Was it risky? Sure. A calculated risk. Many HODLers & protocol devs were facing threats from some miner interest counter to their own.

I respect your opinion & risk assessment, but I disagree. Custodians of Bitcoin should be avoiding unnecessary risk and brinkmanship.

you should note most developers considered 148 too risky and preferred status quo or 149 (which was conservative and slow).

brinkmanship is not ideal. but if pushed too far against ethos at some point users need to hodl the line, or Bitcoin does not mean a damn.
