It had a premine. It didn’t ‘run’ in any sort of closed fashion; right from mainnet launch anyone could run a node without a trusted party being required.

I actually wasn't aware of those; I joined just after Homestead. I hope you don't really believe that an emergency kill switch is remotely the same thing as a central party that approves all transactions, though.
