Hard to understand how Tesla (or any single brand) could generate sufficient critical mass to support a sharing/hailing network.

I think the bigger issue is that unless Tesla has a major head start on AV tech (LOL), purpose-built robotaxis that are optimized for the service will drive the cost per mile to a point where private Teslas aren't competitive.

Tesla's aren't built to optimize the things that matter for robotaxis: durability of both the vehicle and the interior, efficiency of operation, maximizing uptime, etc. Plus, if purpose-built competition exists, the upfront cost of buying a Tesla will seem much higher.

No one would want their
@Tesla punished like a robotaxi. I’m thinking more like I need it for the day or the weekend, not that I’m going across town. Also if you restrict it to Members Only, you can control the type of use cases, demand.2 replies 1 retweet 6 likes -

Sure, but that kind of shared use case isn't going to alter the economics of Tesla ownership... which, per Musk, is the whole point. You'd have to work your Tesla really hard in order to earn enough to make affordable if it otherwise wasn't.

Weak analogy alert, but Musk is trying to draw a carriage with a V8 here. Teslas are designed for private ownership and will be fundamentally compromised against any kind of purpose-built taxi, especially one made by a company with more manufacturing experience.

I don’t disagree. The interiors alone would never hold like a vehicle designed as a taxi, but if it’s of this “longer, lighter” use ... think luxury hotel room vs. interstate reststop ... I think it will be fine. Ask
@tesloop how their@Tesla are holding up. One just hit 300k.3 replies 1 retweet 11 likes -

Our Model S is nearing 400k miles and has transported thousands of passengers. The interior of that vehicle and all of our Model Xs are holding up well.
