If it wasn't broken, why did they release a patch for it? Why did the IOTA team "fix the bug"? There was no bug. Nothing to fix right?

They replaced the hash function based on the claim out of an abundance of caution, just like any responsible party would do. Then they waited for proof; proof which has to date never been proven.
