Household objects you'll find in a molecular biology lab: 1. Instant nonfat dry milk. We use this as a source of raw, non-specific proteins to coat or 'block' special paper used in Western blotting. It's also a great if you run out of powdered creamer for the coffee. Bonus!pic.twitter.com/6B6jjbOSM3

        2. Rain-X. Sometimes we pour very thin layers of wet gel to solidify between large glass plates. Rain-X treatment of the plates keeps the solidified gel from sticking and tearing when released. Although it still will 20% of the f$%&ing time.pic.twitter.com/MVoDA3CZXN

        4. SO MANY PAPER TOWELS: Seriously, paper towels are essentialy, preferably the trifold recycled kind. We use them for removing liquids in sandwiches of special blots, for absorbing small spills or even radioactive surface cleanup. Plus, I do 100% of my calculations on them.pic.twitter.com/qhnYBRFlnt

        5. Everclear: Reagent grade alcohol is great, but very expensive, so if you just need 90%, non reagent grade for spraying surfaces or drying pellets, this is about the cheapest way to get it, short of in-lab moonshining (which does happen). Just keep it away from the rats.pic.twitter.com/WRAaV7ASBG

        6. A monkey wrench We use a lot of bottled gases (CO2, N2) and the fittings need to be tightened, we keep these somewhere to get a little torque (but not too much!) on that gas coupling. Plus, they're great for percussive engineering on busted equipment. Keep away from rats.pic.twitter.com/vFJA1DU9Tv

        7. Dishwashing trays Some labs like to use these, or similar, as drying racks for our fancy glassware. There are often wall-mounted racks, but the really big glassware jut out at odd angles & can fall, and I totally didn't touch it, Todd, thanks for throwing me under the bus.pic.twitter.com/kVbHYHdwkc

        8. Teflon thread tape. See monkey wrench. For ensuring good seals with gas or liquid tanks. Always, for some reason, suspended on a chain next to the CO2 tanks, in my experience. Keep away from rats. Those buggers are always looking for an advantage against us.pic.twitter.com/XGFQ7wirLd

        9. A microwave. By law, it will be labeled "NO FOOD", and by tradition, the interior will be coated with decades of overboiled agarose remains. We use it to heat up liquids very fast, which then flash boil and make a giant mess that Todd better clean up, or else.pic.twitter.com/HR6LngDsbl

        10. A salad spinner. A good idea whose time has come, a $25 salad spinner spins fast enough to pull little droplets of liquid off the sides of tubes so we can recover all of it in one go. I think the rats are plotting ways to weaponize it.pic.twitter.com/8cBjVVOyVC
