Let's talk about blood vessels and cancer. A tumor requires nutrients like any other tissue, thus needs a blood supply, but can quickly outgrow the existing blood vessels. Life-threatening tumors undergo an "angiogenic switch": the ability to form their own blood vessels.pic.twitter.com/JXZoNBa7Gr

This new vasculature is usually frankly terrible: disorganized, narrow, leaky, but it sustains growth beyond what the local supply allows. Enter anti-angiogenic therapy: it blocks new blood vessel development... which should stop tumors growing to life-threatening size....pic.twitter.com/erIz9hi5KU

Which is does... for a while, then the tumor escapes suppression and sometimes gets worse. One idea of why that is: tumors respond to lack of oxygen (hypoxia) by secreting growth factors (and also pro-angiogenesis factors), which antagonizes anti-angiogenic therapy.pic.twitter.com/jmzIt3otOB

Paradoxically, the smart play may be to "normalize" blood vessels within the tumors, making them less leaky and disorganized, reducing hypoxia and the growth response it stimulates, while at the same time normalizing the cells lining the blood vessel that form tight seals.pic.twitter.com/AwTlNs8rEg

There's a particular type of lining cell (endothelial) called a phalanx cell that does a good job of keeping everything around it in place without allowing the hypoxia-induced growth signaling from getting ramped up. That's why research into vascular endothelium...pic.twitter.com/IUiPWJ76en

... can potentially let us control tumors by working to maintain a sort of stasis. It's the "play for a stalemate" strategy of cancer management, but could potentially be easier to manage for certain types of tumors.pic.twitter.com/SeGy1UVDMo

I'm not a therapeutics guy. We work on early detection, accurate prognosis testing, but I am grateful every day for the researchers in academia and industry to work on ways to manage and cure disease, improve patient outcomes. F*ck you, cancer, you fascinating killer. End.pic.twitter.com/YSwQFCMKUA

I know a scientist that is looking into this exact thing, though I believe his research is on halting angiogenesis. This was very informative and interesting, especially the idea of playing for stalemate.
