I would add, learn from your team. They're in the trenches and they can change your strategy, perspective, communication, and even sense of accountability.

I like that your list is the CEO not just a founder. 2-4 are all about storytelling — probably the most crucial skill for a Founder/CEO (holding a high bar for values and integrity otherwise you get Theranos). 1 and 5 are the skills that are required for a founder to scale to CEO

Tips on #5?
-
I was given a great tip on #5. Ask those executing the vision how they plan to do it, what they will be doing, and by when. Work together to make sure it’s feasible, desirable, and aligns with the vision. When you check in ask how things are going with what they promised you.

Agreed. Challenge I’ve run into is people that squirm away from those commitments...but then again maybe you have your answer when that’s the case?

-
If they’re working hard/truly motivated it could be a skills gap that needs coaching. Maybe they don’t know where their blind spots are. If it’s unusual behaviour it could be a personal issue. If they make excuses that’s a whole other issue. People can be taught accountability
-
I say “people can be taught accountability” as a person who was brilliant at making excuses and shifting blame. I learned a lot about accountability at ATB Financial. They had it built into their culture and systems.

Good to know! Any books or other reads that helped?
-
Not really books. More from experience. This blog post by
@LorneRubis has the list of the “ATBs” https://www.theartof.com/articles/lorne-rubis-are-you-an-all-in-leader … The ATBs were part of the day-to-day. We were incentivized to acknowledge them in ourself and others. This helped me develop personally and professionally
