The iOS security model (rightly) won’t let any other company have privileged access to the complete filesystem and user data, so a third-party solution isn’t possible. It falls on Apple to do it.

If Apple wants to be taken seriously as the ‘privacy’ company, then they should offer end-to-end encrypted iCloud backups. Hide it behind ten warning dialogs, whatever. It should be an option, plain and simple.

To be clear, if they did offer it, I wouldn’t use it and I would tell everyone I know not to use it either. The risk of permanent data loss is not worth it for most people, but that’s beside the point.

I want Apple to make the best decisions for my phone. I don’t want options and too many settings to make it complicated for me. And this is an option that sounds cool and the problem with it is horrifying. The number of warnings will just make me appreciate iOS a little less.

I think that ship has sailed a long time ago. Modern iOS has a lot of those kind of options, for things far less important than the backup system.

I was shocked to find out today, that iCloud backups are not e-e encrypted.

Every year thousands of casually iPhone users would lose years of precious photos when they forget their password if e2e was default. I agree e2e should be an option, but not default

I agree. People already lose passwords, preventing security like encrypted backups wont stop that. Make it a “pro” feature. For now the option still exists to perform local encrypted backups. Not the same, but at least it exists.

Let's be honest, there also needs to be an alternative to iCloud backup. With iPhone storage sizes reaching 512GB and iPads with 1TB, local backups to MacBooks, which's Pro/Air base models still are sold with measly 128GB, are just not practical. Laymen won't set up symlinks.
