Effectively, I've gone as far as I could. I've designed higan and bsnes so that it will be as easy as possible for anyone to plug in exact PPU cycle-timings should they become known in the future. I also made a scanline renderer that worked around every issue it possibly could.

At this point, we're 99.9% of the way there. Either I need someone's help to bring this to 100%, or it will have to be done without me after I'm gone. Now that there's finally renewed developer interest in SNES emulation, I'm hoping for the former.

I did not expect "The Edge of Emulation" to reach the frontpage of r/programming *and* Hacker News. I feel bad that it isn't more thorough now ^-^; I'm extremely humbled and grateful for everyone who helped signal boost this. I also have some good leads now on solving this! :D

SNES consoles definitely have some quirks that make 100% accuracy in emulation near-impossible. Have you heard about the Pilotwings discovery? Long thread, but worth a read.https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1126996260026605568?s=19 …

Byuu definitely knows about this. Heck, Byuu is probably why anyone knows about this!

Is there an estimated cost to decap the two PPUs, scan their insides and map them out?

I'm surprised the PPUs haven't been (properly?) decapped yet.
