Nerd question alert: I got fed up with AVG and so have reverted to Windows 10 in-built security for Virus and threat protection. Is that good enough these days, or should I be looking at an additional subscription?

I asked this on the Size Five discord a while back and the consensus was that the built-in security is fine unless you're doing really dodgy stuff.
Great minds don't just think alike they ask the same great questions. Someone else has pointed out that if other people use it - IE MY SON - then additional protection is probably wise.

One person did say "I also do a scan with the free version of malwarebytes once a month", and yeah it seems additional protection can't hurt...

I mean look, at this point your best bet is to join the Size Five discord and then do a search for "Windows Defender" tbh.
