I've been spending a lot of time with my 12 year old son on our holiday, which had been brilliant. We've been doing a lot of queuing, during which time he's been asking me questions I've struggled to answer correctly. I wonder if any of you can help: 1/

I meant to say "has been brilliant" rather than "had", obviously.

1) yes 2) depends on the person 3) if the pieces hit the earth maybe, but generally it wouldn’t kill us living without the moon, it’d affect tides and migratory patterns & a few other bits but we’d all be okay (I think) I’m sure a smarter person would know more detailed answers

There's a Neal Stephensom book that deals with this (Seveneves). Short answer, yes. In the book they manage to get some people into space and survive in an improvised space station.

In the explosion, possibly, if bits hit Earth. Without the moon, Earth’s sea levels would drop significantly (no high tides) and rotation speed would increase massively. And the tilt on axis would become unpredictable so weather would go bonkers. So probably, most of us.

Between the initial force of the explosion and then collisions in the debris field there would be a lot of impacts down here. We possibly wouldn’t ALL die, but a hell of a lot of us would. Eventually, though, any survivors would have a very pretty Saturn-like ring system.

No. We'd have a few less romantic poems, but that would be it.
