I think there's an option that lets you highlight on the map where you are which makes it easier to navigate?
Started Firewatch this trip. Enjoyed the opening, told some girls to stop setting off fireworks now lost stumbling around in the dark unable to read map can't find the tower or see where I'm going terrible, terrible game design so will now stop playing what a waste of money 7/10

Is there an option which lets me see the map in darkness though? I don't have a torch and so the entire map is unreadable.

There was a bug that made the map black and unreadable, there's ways to fix it by googling but I dunno if that's what you're experiencing.
