It's extremely harsh but mostly fair.
I've been reading people chatting about it and it seems awfully complicated. Humanities, bonfires, summoning... Will an idiot like me understand it?

Oh I think so, the only thing that gets complicated is choosing a character class and levelling up. If you go into that blind then you'll have a shitty time.

Summoning you don't really need to worry about early on, bonfires are sort of handy restore points, humanities act as a weird sort of multiplier... it's all fine, it beds in sooner or later.
