I understand the gist of Battle Royale, but there doesn’t seem to be any explanation for new players. Also, can’t work out if you can drive vehicles. Feels like you should be able to.

Okay, now I’m REALLY confused. Came across at least four players in that second match and couldn’t kill any of them. Then another killed me. For a such a global phenomenon, Fortnite’s onboarding is shite. (Yes, my skill level is shite too)

Not sure how kids spend hours playing this every day. I’ve spent 20 minutes playing and I’m tempted to delete it. Guessing tales of ‘addicted’ Fortnite fans getting frustrated are just the ones who a) don’t know what they’re doing either, b) spend most of their time spectating

I felt like that at the outset. I didn’t get it until I decided each of my lives were basically meaningless and was willing to continually jump in and out of games.

Meant that I died absolutely loads. But after 30 quickish rounds, started to get the feel for the weapons and the rhythm of building.

I’m only three rounds in, but none of it is making any sense. Even when I thought I was out of the safe zone I still wasn’t able to kill someone - he just did a red card emote then started dancing. Barely a few steps away, someone else killed me

If it makes you feel better, I didn’t kill anyone until my 24th round. Those kids have freakish reactions.

Heh, not expecting to suddenly be a killing machine, but to at least damage then would be a start. Thing is, 24 ten-minute rounds means I'm looking at 4 hours of struggling to get into this game, which is a lot more than I'm willing to put in. Was playing mainly out of curiosity

That's fair enough. I think I must have hit roughly 2 hours before I truly 'got' it and can understand that's a fair time to get into it. I would recommend @keefstuart's piece about getting into Fortnite though. Acted as a tutorial for me: https://www.theguardian.com/games/2018/may/29/fortnite-rules-of-survival-tips-games …

Rumour has it there's a sandbox mode coming so oldies like us can fuck about trying to understand the build mechanic without being murdered by children.Fingers crossed it's also offline on Switch.

All fingers crossed! Was hoping something like that was already available when they launched it on Switch last week - that would have been a good game for the flight home.

I need that too because I am a dreadful builder. I can shoot well but keep getting monstered by people who can throw a tower up in ten seconds.
