In 's , Marie is a teen who reports being raped. I was one of the reporters who first told Marie’s full story. To me, Marie is not a character. She is someone who trusted me with her story, painful as it was. Here are Marie’s and my thoughts on the show:

NEW STUDY: Permafrost thaw's contribution to climate change may be *double* what we once thought. Top Arctic scientists spent years figuring it out. And they call the estimate conservative. It's not getting much attention. It should. My story (1)

But there’s more! As a musician, journalist, photographer, electrician and organic farmer at the “Big Zucchini Chicken Ranch,” Jaisun opened for the Grateful Dead, shared a stage with B.B. King, interviewed Hank Aaron, helped rebuild homes after Katrina, and ran for governor.

There's a paid obit in today's Seattle Times for Jeffrey Jassen, aka Jef Jaisun, and it is one hell of a ride. Those of, ahem, a certain age might remember listening to Jaisun's song "Friendly Neighborhood Narco Agent" on the Dr. Demento show. 1/2

I’ve been working on this—my first feature—for months. It’s the story of one family, split in half for no reason by Border Patrol. It’s also a story of how completely US border policy has changed in past yr. Lemme (ahem) explain. 1/

“I am a danger to the public.” That’s what a pharmacist wrote to the Texas pharmacy board last year. Over the past few months, I’ve learned it is a concern echoed in some of the biggest retail pharmacies across the country.

Authorities in Wisconsin did not want you to read this story. First a prosecutor sought a gag order after I reached out seeking comment. Then a state agency sent me a cease and desist order warning of potential criminal charges. Proud of for publishing it anyway.

My former student Angela left Purdue to deal w depression and began working at a coffee shop. When she came back she took my class and wrote an essay about depression and the coffee shop, how it helped her. She recently bought that shop and wrote about it:

I did not make it onto the jury. But I wasn’t struck for cause. I was bounced with a peremptory strike. (Pretty sure I can guess which side’s.) I’ve known quite a few reporters who have made it onto juries. Alas, to this day, I am not one of them. 6/6

Really? he said. And on and on it went. There, in open court, he had me unload my clip file. He had me talk about bad judges, junk evidence, unfair trial tactics, innocent people who had been convicted and even sentenced to death. 5/

Really? he said. He looked about the courtroom, his eyes inviting the whole jury pool to listen in. What else have you found? And we were off. Well, I said. Prosecutors. They’ve been caught, lots of times, concealing evidence that favored the defense. 4/

Lots of things. Hospitals. Schools. And, uh, criminal justice. Oh. Criminal justice? Yes. What kinds of criminal justice stories have you written? Well...lots. Police. They, uh, sometimes get innocent people to confess. 3/

Yes! I thought. (I would really like to be on a jury. I think I would be fair. Don’t we all?) But the questioning went on. In time, the defense attorney returned to me. So you’re a reporter? Yes. What kind? I’m on the investigative team. Oh. What do you investigate? 2/

Pam, I so relate. A few years ago, I thought I might make it onto a jury. It was in Seattle. A felony case. The first time I was questioned, neither lawyer plumbed. It was pretty much: So you’re a reporter? Yes. They moved on. 1/
