This wording is so disingenuous and cowardly, with POC as the subject of the active verb, as if their not appearing is of their own agency and/or a result of "the field's" structural problems rather than a decision made by the individuals writing these sentences.https://twitter.com/ISASaxonists/status/1210667914354925568 …

The editors took the time to acknowledge that in their intro rather than just include PoC in their book. They used a handful of non-early medievalist scholars as shields when some of their work is barely relevant. The pieces on race are almost entirely absent of CRT. 3/26 pic.twitter.com/fSaS6mO06i

Structural racism is an important concept but not as a dodge of accountability for one's individual choices and failures. To say that "we notice" in this context is to give yourself credit for the noticing, without taking responsibility for the omission. Gross.

You nailed it. It's framed as though this was somehow unavoidable and out of the hands of the editor. This is PoCs fault for not being included.

Yup. A truly incredible non-apology. Can you imagine this in any other context, like, "Yes, Your Honor, drunk driving is а big problem. Within this very courtroom, I notice that some people got hit by a car."

We KNOW these people. They have delivered conference papers beside us, they have read our public work (probably don't read our academic stuff). Organized something with one of us. I guess we should have sent gifts.
