But equally, it should be pointed out that Richard Utz is not that person. This man has billed himself as a progressive public scholar while making a pattern of publicly undermining and attacking medievalists of color.

For him to say that all he wants is to be left alone to live the life of the mind alone and in peace is grade A disingenuous self-victimizing BS.

This is like the playground bully saying he just wanted to be left alone but the kids he punched kept bullying him. Or like Draco Malloy complaining about getting “attacked” by Buckbeak.

If Utz wanted to be a monk in his cloister, he could easily have kept on doing that without attracting any notice. So what is he doing giving incendiary quotes to the NYT?

This is a clear continuation of his pattern of publicly undermining and, dare I say gaslighting, medievalists of color. And for the NYT to give him a platform for it like he’s a valid neutral authority with a valid non-white supremacist position is beyond irresponsible.

I’m pretty sure the U.S. government wants academia to be a propaganda factory for its pro-war/white supremacist/performative Christian capitalist nightmare vision. Not like a far-right government hasn’t done it before:https://www.nytimes.com/1995/06/01/world/german-scholar-unmasked-as-former-ss-officer.html …
