$10,900 - or 5.25 an hour - in 1981 at the Corpus Christi (TX) Caller-Times. Same pay I received as a part-time clerk at the Austin Public Library in college. But better parties.

Had to work for six years to make that salary in journalism. I started I’m 2010.

My heart sank just now. I teach journalism students and talk to them so much about the wonders of the job. But the pay ... Damn, how do I keep them going?

I always think that this makes it so those who don't come from a background that would support this low of a salary can't go into journalism at all. I made about $38k in my first full time journalism job but I also lived with my parents.

Mine was around $26K in 2012. I know because I just got audited for 2013 and I was making $27K as a reporter (I owed the government $80, but that's a different frustrating story)
-
Damn! You were making $27k and you got AUDITED?!?
