... but 100% of people can help reduce demand for single-use plastics and (I’m guessing) less than 1% are deep sea fishermen. This problem just needs everyone to be responsible for their own impact.

Do you eat fish or fish products caught in nets? Lots of people could demand change to fishing practices to reduce net use and net loss. But banning straws is easy if you don’t need them.
-
-
This seems to be where bans are needed most:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4970214/95-plastic-oceans-comes-just-TEN-rivers.html …
-
Not to discredit - I 100% back the findings- I’m just wondering if the research conduction may not restricting itself by focusing on river plastic pollution. More specifically, in the sampling that focuses itself on 57 of the 165 global rivers...

This foreal shook me but .03% is still a shit ton of plastic so I'm going to continue using my reusable straw and trying to convince others to do the same.
-
So long as you don't call for flexible single use straws to be banned, that doesn't hurt people.
-
I completely understand the single use straws, especially for those who are disabled I just don't support the height of which we waste plastic.
-
instead of banning them, like most people are wanting, maybe we could use an alternative to plastic E.G use a biodegradable alternative to plastic that will not damage our oceans and still have the same effect for disabled people
-
Except current biodegradable straw options are still unsuitable for many. They can be too brittle, they can dissolve if they're left in liquids for too long and cannot be used to consume warmer/hot liquids. Plus biodegradable plastics have many other cons in general.
-
Thank you for informing me! We definitely need to put a lot more funding into finding a type of biodegradable plastic that doesn't do any of this and is suitable for the use of disabled people. Or even just a more sustainable and suitable alternative
-
Pasta straws
-
Too rigid so there's a risk for injury and they would be unusable for those who need positionable straws. Also can't stay in liquids for prolonged amounts of time. And possible allergies. It's easy to suggest things but reading up on this topic should be as well : )

Remember, it's about what *feels* like you're helping, not actually helping.
-
Wasn't it Shel Silverstein who said, "Some kind of help is the kind of help that helping's all about, and some kind of help is the kind of help we all could do without"?

That is misleading because the total amount of plastic in the ocean is enormous, so even 0.03% are tons and tons of plastic in the ocean. Banning fish nets might contribute to the collapse entire economies, but banning straws will not.
-
This is similar to the high efficiency lightbulb thing. Ok every little bit helps. But stricter regulations for the fishing industry could have far greater impact. The moral of the story is individuals are being asked to sacrifice so business and industry can pollute en mass
-
...and if someone wants to have stricter regulations for fishing industry 1) lobbyists will complain and spend a ton of money against it and 2) naysayers will complain that some other intervention is more effective. Nirvana fallacy.
-
You are right, solutions are impossible, lets just let the ocean die while we feel good about having no straws.
-
Hey! At least we'll have paper straws to put in our giant plastic cups. Or better yet, let's fuck the environment all together. Then folx can feel better about making things worse.https://www.google.com/amp/s/reason.com/blog/2018/07/12/starbucks-straw-ban-will-see-the-company/amp …
-
If you still think Starbucks use too much plastic, go ahead and support bans for those products as well instead of unproductive complains on social media.
-
Sorry the conversation hurts. I learned about the Starbucks thing and your Nirvana thing, I hope you read about ghost fishing. Twitter is about sharing ideas and information and I do not think it is unproductive as you say but ok
-
You see, your entire argument boils down to "but it is not a perfect solution because of X, so I am rationally justified in being against it!" The truth is that everyone can see through your weak attempts at rejecting climate mitigations with the same old deceptive fallacies.
