ripgrep does a bunch of stuff to try to be faster than everybody else, see this old but super interesting article about it https://blog.burntsushi.net/ripgrep/
Yup, that blog post is basically still accurate as far as analysis goes. ripgrep has gotten faster in some cases, mostly due better use of parallelism and improved line counting via the bytecount library.
