Time to run my grep search, 44 seconds (after multiple runs). Time to run the same search in ripgrep, 0.1 seconds (first run!). Need to keep ripgrep in my head from now on.
Which version of grep? GNU or BSD? Were you running a recursive search on a large directory? Or a single file?

Recursive search on a large directory. Stock Mac OS grep. Lots of git repos. I think ripgrep can intelligently sift through only the real files. It was awesome.

Ah, yeah, stock Mac OS grep is the problem. That's BSD grep and is known to be slow. Try ggrep (GNU grep), which you can install from brew. It might be faster! (But may not be. Performance measuring is hard.)
