Read/Write *must* use results. The ByteOrder trait is a pure data transformation. I chose to make insufficient input a contract violation.

Fair enough. So correct intended usage is for the caller to ensure they're handing read_u16 a pair of buffers of size 2, etc.?

Yes. (read_u16 takes a single buffer though.)
