Some of the issues you mentioned are things available in a GNOME install that aren't on a barebones Arch install. Gnome Settings Daemon stores keyboard backlight preference and handles backlight keys, and dbus is required to use the firmware daemon.

Oh nice. Does that mean there is a ways I can programmatically interact with it via, say, /sys or something? If I could do that, then I could fairly easily cook up some shell scripts to have it do what I want.

In /sys/class/leds/system76_acpi::kbd_backlight you will find a brightness file and a color file. The brightness file accepts a value from 0 to 255. The color file accepts an RGB color such as FF0000 for red.

My hero! A thousand thank yous! AND it even looks like it supports arbitrary RGB color codes, so I'm not limited to the preset colors. ^_^
