I just upgraded my laptop for the first time in ~8 years. I went from a ThinkPad T430 to a System76 Darter Pro. I wrote up my thoughts on the laptop and my experience installing Archlinux on it: https://blog.burntsushi.net/system76-darter-archlinux/ …

Great writeup! Why was NVIDIA a "hard pass" for you during your search for a next laptop?

Because Linux and nvidia don't mix well. A web search should help there. Plus I've heard too many horror stories about bumblebee being needed on laptops.

I tried Arch for a while but was burned when someone pushed out an ImageMagick compiled with -mcpu=native, causing it to crash on my machine. Cost me an afternoon debugging that.

I've spent a lot more time than that trying to convince Ubuntu to use upgraded versions of packages in order to get bug fixes that were made months or years ago.

I tried synaptics rather than libinput and it was really poor at palm detection. Libinput seemed much better. #nixos

Personally I enjoy #archlinux as my workstation thanks to its simplicity, speed and customization. User for more than 3 years since its unique USB stick installation on my laptop.
