Weird to find tools that take .gitignore as input but also try to detect a git repository before using it. If the file is present obviously someone wanted it there for something... Why is it the tools job to care about git?

Rust tools like ripget or fd? I find them using gitignore kind of useful while being kind of annoying at the same time: it’s useful when working with git actions, but it’s annoying when wanting to check subfolders that are gitignored for reasons.

I was annoyed by ripgrep... it was broken for me for several months because they changed it to only honor .gitignore if a .git/ folder was found. Doesn't feel like ripgrep's job to enforce that kind of thing.

Honestly, I’d rather maintain a .rgignore and .fdignore file separately instead of relying on the .gitignore. Or a special flag to take the latter into account, optionally.

Thanks for sharing. Does it take precedence over .gitignore?
