Ah yeah that explains it. BSD grep is not known for its speed. :) GNU grep will probably fair better in a comparison!

Running without line numbers (-N) does little more better for rg.

Yup! Line counting can be improved when ripgrep is compiled with AVX features enabled. Hopefully soon this will automatically happen without needing to re-compile ripgrep with special flags.
