TBH it's not bad -- each step is clearly shown, even if the route is circuitous. I prefer it to mucking with .debs or compiling from scratch. (A PPA might be more convenient, but command-not-found wouldn't direct me to it.)

Or install rust/cargo via rustup and enable CPU specific instructions for your compiles for that little extra speed boost RUSTFLAGS="-Ctarget-cpu=native"

Soon this won't matter much at all. :-) The regex library already gets SIMD optimizations automatically without compile time flags. The only things left are SIMD optimizations for line counting and transcoding (the latter doesn't happen at all for the most part on Unix).
