IMHO they were not just protecting themselves, but others they were deeply associated with including but not limited to The Second Mile. Things just moved too fast. They were truly afraid of information coming out that would have been harmful to their reputations and incomes.
A personal vendetta and prompting from a curiously hands on governor, resulted in the firing of an innocent man. PSU's administration and BOT need to work to restore his good name. 11/9/11 the OGBOT acted to protect themselves, not the university they were sworn to serve.
