🇨🇴Colombians are a little bananas and if you’ll be spending NYE with one of us I feel it’s my responsibility to tell you about the weird superstitious traditions you may observe so you can be prepared.

As a fun fact, the grapes tradition comes from Spain and Ecuador has their own “año viejo” tradition, only that they use quite big dolls...

After midnight, the dolls are set on fire, as we free ourselves from all the bad things that came and get ready for a better New Year. This is the last tradition I’ll tell you about, I have to go buy some grapes and hope that my fellow Colombians jump in the w more traditions

My favorite one, (and one that would likely get me arrested in NYC), is the burning of the Old Year (Año Viejo). We take old clothes and stockings, stuff them with newspaper and fireworks and make a doll that signifies the year that has passed. Every family makes a doll or more

There’s one about leaving an egg in water under the bed, and then some sort of taro reading of the yolk, but I don’t know enough about it to tell you what it’s about.

Lentils. You must have your *right* pocket full of raw lentils so that you attract money in the New Year, and also protect your family from bad energies.

If you get the peeled one, there will be scarcity and problems (eg, 2020). The half-peeled one will mean you’ll have an ok year. If you get the one with peel, then it will be year of abundance and success.

The potato prediction: Get three potatoes. Peel one, half peel another, and leave the third unpeeled. Throw them under the bed before the year ends, and when you’re back from running around the block, fish a potato w/o looking from under the bed.

By running around the block, ideally dragging your kids behind, you’ll ensure that the coming year will be full of travel. And it will be even better if you have money in your pockets. If you have greenbacks (dollars), then you will get to travel to the USA.

You start getting into weird territory with the suitcases. If you want to travel the world, you should have an empty suitcase next to the door ready for the stroke of midnight. After you’re done with the grapes, grab the suitcase and do laps around the block.

Next, the underwear. Yellow underwear that meets the regulation must also be worn on the 31st of December by every Colombian (and their international guests). Welcoming the New Year with yellow underwear will guarantee your good luck. It’s power is enhanced by grapes (its not).

The simplest, and most innocuous one, is the consumption of grapes. At the stroke midnight, Colombians are mandated by law to eat 12 grapes as fast as they can without choking, before even hugging or kissing anyone. Each grape represents a month of good luck.
