It probably ends up being a proximity reflow action rather than using the soldering iron tip as intended. :D That is how it felt when I did the kit yesterday, despite the fact that I had a bit more appropriate soldering tip to work with.

I think that is basically correct. At that scale it's more about getting heat transfer and allowing residue solder tinned onto the pads melt onto the part. Hence, counter-intuitively, a larger tip can be better, which is why I was happy to use the "crappy" house iron.
