  2. The author of Clojure about a year ago wrote excellent post about how it feels to be inside Open Source project and it resonates a lot with me. OSS is full of illusions, especially from the outside world.

Unix pipelines are still one of the most simple and wonderful architecture decisions for me. I use it as inspiration at all my projects, and even whole GoReplay architecture inspired by them.

At some degree, I found myself in a similar position. When your notifications/task count reach some threshold, standard note taking and task management flows stop working. Nowadays I rely on delegation, and assuming that people will remind me if smth is really important.

Earlier I mentioned virtual console, which has constraint based design: you have limit on number of lines, sprites, 128x128 resolution, no frameworks, and even lower case letters not possible. Now check the picoCAD...

The world is in chaos. People are going through much worse, but I feel like I have to share that I was let go from my job unexpectedly this week. I'm building a personal site that will have more details, but here's my Linkedin profile and a thread. 👇

Smile is trickier than you think, and treated completely differently by western and easter cultures. In western cultures, like the UK, a smile is an essential part of the conversation. In eastern cultures, especially post USSR, no one smiling for granted.

I had a funny story with my coworkers in Sales, when we attended a meeting with a Russian company. After the call, he thought that he screw it up, because no matter how he tried, everyone on the call had a poker face. Afterward, we found that they were extremely happy.

Unless you will accept how people are diverse and how to use this to understand them better, you will not be able to build a successful career in the modern distributed world.

At Tyk, we have more than 74 people, from 22 countries all around the globe. For me, it feels natural to be work with people of any background, but it was not like this all the time. It takes time to understand how people are amazingly diverse.

  15. Another interesting thing about working with Muslims is that interest on loans is forbidden by Islam. In our company, we have a person, who opted out from directly working with any Bank related clients. And we gave him this option.

  16. Religion is another interesting side of the multinational teams. For example, if you are working with the Muslim, when you schedule a meeting, you should consider his time for regular prayer. Or when Ramazan starts his day schedule can completely change.

  19. Physical meetings are even trickier. When you meet people you never really know which language you going to speak. When I’m with the person who speaks my native language, we use it, but whenever someone else tries to join your group you have to switch to the English.

  20. It takes a lot of effort for your brain to switch between multiple languages. So far my preferred way is to use English everywhere for the chat, even private, and native language during 1-1 longer video meetings.

  21. I’m not a native English speaker, and imagine I have a coworker whose native language same as mine. Which language we will use to communicate in person? This question can be trickier then you can imagine.
