“In education, we must resist reducing philosophical and theoretical truths to fixed templates that then become not guiding principles but simplistic mandates to be fulfilled.”

I know it's superbowl weekend, however why not try a tech timeout with your family? Here are some things to do as a family without tech.

I think the part about the dancing robot is especially relevant.

Less than 50% of high school students find education relevant now. And As long as standardized tests continue to be the measure of success, formal education will become even less relevant.

So...Which ones of you are held by gunpoint, knifepoint, legislation, punishable policy or some other career or life threatening thing that’s keeping you from doing the right and courageous thing for young readers. Be brave, real reading.

Part of what makes this powerful is the sudden revelation of the cumulative weight of deeds done in secret with no hope of reward. Moral greatness is neither achievable by nor subject to instrumental ROI, optics, or algorithms.

Trying to teach like other teachers ... behave like other teachers ... talk like other teachers ... deprives the kids of your gift to them ... the real you.

Maybe they don't read outside my classroom, by choice or circumstance. The least I can do is ensure they have a place to read with me.

Parents and teachers - please allow students to read comics, graphic novels, and manga!

Do you wish you kept a reading log for every book you have ever read? Me neither.

One year ago today I helped a patron prepare for a job interview by going over his resume and loaning him one of my bow ties. He got the job. Today we opened our tie library with 50 ties from my collection. Open to all. No library card needed. 5 already checked out!

A great example of a formative assessment that is differentiated to students' individual authentic needs, especially when used w/1:1 student conferences. Assessment doesn't have to be multiple choice.

The library isn’t mad that you used a fruit leather as a bookmark, just disappointed.

I remember very few moments of primary school with crystal clarity. The ones I do mostly involve sitting rapt as a teacher read to us. I remember hanging on every word of I Am David like it was yesterday.

"In other words, the majority of any extra money will disappear as it slowly funnels through the chain of bureaucracy over at the district office." Let's make students the priority when it comes to educational spending, not bureaucracies or private corporations.

"We’re constantly reading for skill. We’re constantly asking kids to do something with their reading, and then wondering why they’re choosing to leave us and never picking up another book. They can’t wait to get out of school so that they don’t have to read.”

Never understood sick notes. So childish. I have 2 masters & a PhD & was hired as an executive. Really, a sick note? I always refused to provide one. Once I had an employer who would call the Dr's office to verify you had an appt. Quickly left that job.

The schools most in need of creative solutions are often the same schools that wrestle with the harshest accountability measures. When school buildings are constantly afraid of failure, they are less likely to create the innovation necessary to meet their students’ unique needs.
