It's the year 2020, and we're still finding buffer overflows in programs written in C. Fortunately, those programs are only esoteric, rarely installed programs like... <checks notes> sudo.

Nice to see Swift continue its fast growth - interesting that Swift, C and C++ are the only traditionally statically compiled languages in the top 10.

Had a lot of fun this week visiting the S4TF team and helping train resnets on ImageNet to full accuracy on TPUs. Code will be open-sourced soon, so stay tuned!

Sigh internet🧐. Clarifying: all of the projects I was involved in & driving at Google (incl. S4TF, MLIR, an incredible new TF runtime, XLA, TPU SW, etc) are in very good hands 💪🙌, have exec commitment and strong roadmaps. I c/wouldn't leave if uncertain about that!

Have you ever wondered what will be the ML frameworks of the '20s? In this essay, I examine the directions AI research might take and the requirements they impose, concluding with an overview of what I believe to be two strong candidates: JAX and S4TF.

There's great potential in the use of machine learning for a wide variety of weather and climate problems. Here's one example, predicting precipitation at much finer spatial granularity than traditional physics-based models.

I completed my 1st data science project ~30 years ago. Since then I've been continuously developing a questionnaire I use for all new data projects, to ensure the right info is available from the start. I'm sharing it publicly today for the first time.

The "Deep Learning Toolbox" has greatly expanded in the last decade thanks to our wonderful research community. Also, important progress has been made to make our community more inclusive and less toxic. Still, there's LOTS to do, and I plan to keep focusing on advancing both.

The 2010s were an eventful decade for NLP! Here are ten shocking developments since 2010, and 13 papers* illustrating them, that have changed the field almost beyond recognition. (* in the spirit of and , exclusively from other groups :)).

I don’t know what amount of black magic went into JAX, but my first shot at a vectorized Metropolis Hastings showed a 3x speedup over NumPy on *CPU*. Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, you’re next.

After some optimization, I get a speedup of x1.3 for a single chain (wtf already) and 10x for 100,000 chains. I am only jitting and substituting numpy with jax.numpy. This deserves a blog post.

Reasons I love writing and think everyone should write more: 1. To organize your thoughts 2. To learn: the best way to learn is to write/teach 3. To keep you accountable 4. To document your progress 5. To write better 6. To put your name out there 7. To enjoy the beauty of words

I still really like the description of Swift’s memory model (I believe I’m paraphrasing here) as being exactly like Rust, except all lifetimes are implicit and whenever it would emit a compile error it emits a copy or retain instead.
