People keep pointing out that today is a palindrome in day-month and month-day formats, but I’m learning that more people need to write their dates yyyy-mm-dd. Because 2020-02-02 or 20200202 are ALSO palindromes, but they meet the ISO standard and actually sort properly as text.

‘This Is A Cloud Security Nightmare’: the fact that major cloud providers invest a lot in security doesn’t mean it never fails, as this incident illustrates. How many other latent ‘10.0’ flaws are just waiting to be found, maybe by less-ethical hackers?

A problem maybe unique to Swiss bars and restaurants: where in the great competition for wall hooks your coat is up against hanging cow bells.

I enjoyed speaking at AXA Days in Paris today on data security and privacy risks in the use of some hot information technologies. Thanks to and for their generous support for security/privacy and digital trust research in my lab and many others.

Insider attacks by service providers, that is, when a rogue employee at Google, Facebook or Twitter collects our private information, is a huge problem.

"Digital Architecture for Trust in the 21st Century" - slides from my flash talk at the House of Switzerland today in Davos. On blockchains, privacy, and how technology needs to serve and be accountable to the many, not just the one or the few.

"Voting and Blockchain: Promise and Challenges" - slides from my presentation at the Geneva Blockchain Congress, on how blockchain-based E-voting is promising and worth developing, but definitely not a magic solution to E-voting security.

I wrote about the Trump admin's new war on encryption and how William Barr is clearly lying in an attempt to pressure Apple to weaken security protections for its users.

I wrote an article to simply explain side channels in SGX and other trusted execution environments, and why they are good as a secondary security measure but not a primary one.

Privacy advocates have long said it should be treated as a human right. Finally we have an economist supporting this view: Alessandro Acquisti (), who did many of the pioneering studies of how framing affects privacy. Essay by .

I have stopped reviewing any non open access journal. I wonder if it's time for academics to boycott serving on any program committees whose proceedings are not open access. It's clear isn't listening to *their* key stakeholders. cc

Technologists who think platforms for online speech are neutral and don’t have politics should remember that the left-right political spectrum dates to the French revolution, wherein the geometry of the meeting hall helped fragment the debate and polarize the members' positions.

Finding, evaluating, and recruiting job candidates is one of the many ways AI is being increasingly misused to de-humanize critical societal processes, perpetuating bias and reducing transparency and accountability. Article by ⁦

Real humans will soon be overwhelmed and effectively outvoted in every way by fake accounts in the online world, unless we have a Sybil-resistant identity foundation grounded in real-world physical security like pseudonym parties or proof-of-personhood.

Tools for creating highly-convincing fake identities, and automatically maintaining and growing them over time, are already becoming mature and widely-available and will only get better. AI can’t reliably detect fake identities, because AI keeps getting better at making fakes.

What dystopian garbage. What's happening in China matters—obviously to the people of China, but elsewhere, too. A favorite argument of lobbyists pushing this kind of tech in the U.S. is that China is taking the lead on AI, blockchain, and whatnot, and the U.S. needs to catch up.

why is a PhD thesis often better to read than a paper? - no silly restrictions on length - not written for benefit of at least one likely-hostile reviewer - written by someone junior and less jaded among other reasons
