I'm becoming proficient in Scala and Play framework for backend development. I picked that stack because I thought the tech is awesome, but lately I realized that if I ever want to find freelance gigs (with ease), then I must learn Javascript, TypeScript, Nodejs, Express etc.

Can’t hurt to learn enough JavaScript, html, css to put some content in a browser.

It's not as easy as it sounds. It's not about the language. Learning new syntax and dogmas is not so hard. But learning a whole new ecosystem, new tools, frameworks, libraries and most importantly a new community, is very hard IMO. That's why I dont believe in "fullstack" devs.

Nope. Not easy. But we as a group are very well paid when you take into account the amount of real effort we expend. This is why.

True but learning the syntax takes weeks, learning the framework takes months and learning what the compiler really does to your code, takes years...
