    This year, I've replaced most of my media consumption with reading books. I'm on pace to read 96 this year. This is partially a brag and partially a mechanism to keep me accountable. Mostly, it shows how much time I used to spend watching mediocre TV and movies.

    Examples of non-existent DTC positioning: These 4 "luxury" bedding companies are the same. I know the names, and have seen their ads, but couldn't tell you anything special about any of them. Same minimal aesthetic. Same soggy messaging. Same faux-lux products. Be different.

    Quants have ruined everything. At a brewery where you pour your own beer and pay by the ounce. We had to be trained how to serve ourselves. But hey, *technology*.

    Doesn't mean there's not room for Bud or Gillette. They'll still have large market share because they can have low prices and are ubiquitous. But the manufacturing tech that allowed them to dominate allows others to provide a unique product for a smaller group.

    The acquisition part is interesting, too. I think we'll see a rise in independent companies, a lot like independent breweries. Big beer got in early and gobbled up a few, but have struggled to compete with indy regional breweries on craft.

    People want choice, especially for items they use every day. If you're going to have a routine, it should be something you enjoy. Reminds me a lot of the EDC crowd. Tools are commodities, yet we all want to find the ones that make us feel good. And we'll pay a premium, too.

    Now, I'm not an ad man, but I do take notice of advertising failures. Case in point: the use of button styling on non-web advertisements. I've seen everything from billboards to TV commercials and now Instagram story ads using buttons.
