A year ago today, we were 12,000 people strong at City Hall. How does change happen — from the top down, or the bottom up? When insiders change their minds, or when those on the outside organize? Are our politics about those already in power, or those closest to the problem?

Nikkita Oliver smiling with microphone in front of Seattle city hall after delivering demands to “Mayor” Durkan. Wearing all black and a head scarce, flanked by several other organizers.
