storylines vs. storycircles if the default shape for a narrative is the story *line*, then ‘Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate’ by Ted Chiang and ‘Dark’ on Netflix are both story *circles*. is there a legit name for this genre, i am looking for more examples

Chiasm/chiasmus, the nested boxes approach. It's a Hebrew thing. Cloud Atlas is a modern example. Russian Doll Netflix has aspects of this too

Chiasm is more a technique than a genre. But shows/movies like these kind of elaborate it into a genre. The OA too is similar

I love the way Arrival uses circular time in its narrative structure, not just as a plot point

Ya that’s a good one! Only recently found out that it was inspired by a Ted Chiang story

"any sane onlooker" is an important point. It's bumping into the long tails of obsession that is surprising. reminds me of this; present company excluded o'course :p 'Most of What You Read on the Internet is Written by Insane People'https://www.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/9rvroo/most_of_what_you_read_on_the_internet_is_written/ …
